WISTA LUNCH & LEARN-OCTOBER 2026

At WISTA’s October 2026 Lunch n’ Learn, I had the opportunity to present on the M/V Dali and the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge—a tragedy that claimed six lives and resulted in an estimated $5 billion or more in economic losses.

The case is now unfolding along two distinct legal tracks:

▸ Civil: A limitation of liability proceeding, a $101.98 million settlement of federal response costs, and a $2.25 billion settlement with the State of Maryland.

▸ Criminal: An 18-count DOJ indictment filed in May 2026 against two Synergy entities and a shoreside technical superintendent.

The implications for the maritime industry extend well beyond this incident. Shoreside management may face personal criminal exposure, while failures in hazard reporting and candor with investigators can give rise to separate criminal charges.

Key takeaways: Document management-of-change decisions involving critical systems, test blackout recovery and redundancy, promptly report known hazards, and implement legal holds immediately following a serious incident.

Thank you to WISTA for the opportunity to discuss this important case and its broader implications for maritime safety, compliance, and accountability.
